Prepares for an Upgrade & Renovation

After several years of planning, a Master Plan project has been approved by the Board of Trustees for the renovation and upgrade of the Manhattan Campus at East 25 th Street and the F.D.R. Drive.  The building was erected in the early 1970's and opened in February, 1973 housing Kindergarten through 12 grades.  The Master Plan addresses the School's current need for additional classroom and teaching spaces, a larger lobby and cafeteria, an expanding performing arts center and a centralized sports complex.  In addition, a major focus on updating materials and systems throughout the building support a healthier, safer and greener environment demonstrating the School values of community and respect for our world along with our strong stress on academic excellence.

The project will be carried out in several phases beginning this summer.  The first phase will include a complete renovation of the entry way to the school, the lobby and cafeteria.    Offices from the third floor will subsequently be relocated to the new lobby area and the Kindergarten (JA) will move from the second floor to the main floor freeing up much needed space on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

The second phase will focus on a new sports complex on the roof.  This new area will feature two gyms, an exercise room and locker rooms.  Once completed, all physical education programs will take place in one central location utilizing both indoor and outdoor space resulting in more flexibility for program scheduling and allowing the students to participate in a variety of sports, promoting both their mental and physical health.  This phase also creates more space throughout the building.

The last phase of the project will focus on the expansion of the Performing Arts Centre.   A new theatre will be built to complement the existing one.  In addition, a more spacious lobby area will be created between the two theatres creating a true theatre ambiance and completing a dedicated performing arts wing at the School.

The UNIS Queens Campus, located in Jamaica Estates, will also begin renovations over the summer.  A new HVAC system, upgrades to electrical and plumbing systems and a new roof will be installed.  The board has approved these upgrades to further support the sustainability and greening  of the School.
