As part of its mission, UNIS is committed to bringing the UN closer to its students through academic programs and activities. Hence the institution of the UN Studies course for Tutorial One students. The purpose of this course is to help students acquire knowledge of the UN in its history, structure (organs, specialized agencies, standing agencies), workings and initiatives (in particular the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), its successes and shortcomings.
Through rigorous research, exposés, projects and interaction with UN officials, students are moved into a pathway which leads to a personal appreciation of what the UN is all about, with each individual at the center of its mission.
The course is articulated around three summits, in a triangular process:
- Preparation for and celebration of the International Day of Peace (September)
The Student Conference on Human Rights (December)
The UNIS-UN Conference (March)
- The UN and the MDGs
- The country study and strategy for meeting the Goals
