As part of its mission, UNIS is committed to bringing the UN closer to its students through academic programs and activities, and this is given special focus in the UN Studies course for Tutorial One students.
The purpose of the course is to help students extend their knowledge of the UN: its history, structure, agencies, workings and initiatives, its successes and shortcomings.
The course integrates three key components:
- Detailed study of the United Nations itself
- Research on the Millenium Development Goals, linked to a country study
- Participation in the International Day of Peace (September), the Student Conference on Human Right (December) and the UNIS-UN Conference (March).
Throughout the year students develop an understanding of UN, its goals and programs, that is both informed and personal.
Other UN related units are integrated throughout the Social Studies/Humanities Program.
