Richard Smith (Flute) is a musician, educator and African music scholar. He performs as both a classical musician and African/African-American musician. He recently received his Ph.D. from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His dissertation is titled Music Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: Nigeria and Beyond, which is aimed towards assisting in the development of musicians and music education in Africa.
Dr. Smith also studied at the Juilliard School and the Académie Internationale d'Eté in France, where he studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal. He also participated in master classes with James Galway in London. Dr. Smith was named a United States Fulbright research scholar to Nigeria in 1994-1995. Besides music and music education, his graduate studies include ethnomusicology, ranging from music of the Hispanic Caribbean, Afro-Caribbean, and Africa, to cross-cultural studies incorporating many world cultures.
Dr. Smith has made numerous research tours to Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe. He is composer and arranger of numerous instrumental compositions, many incorporating world idioms, especially African idioms. He is the writer or subject or several published articles. He has performed in several African countries, as classical soloist and as collaborator with African musicians. Dr. Smith has taught at several African universities and secondary schools.
