The student/computer ratio at UNIS has become 2:1. Over 900 networked desktop computers and laptops are available in classrooms, computer and language labs, libraries, and offices. All computers form part of UNISnet, a "Wide Area Network" that spans both campuses. UNISwifi covers both campuses and provides wireless access to the same network. Every computer has high speed Internet access. Projectors, large classroom monitors, and close to 100 ActivBoards, interactive whiteboards, have been installed to facilitate instruction of class-size groups with the help of a computer. |
Starting at the Middle school level, students have individual network accounts and e-mail addresses. The network accounts come with a "home directory," a space on a server that makes it possible for students and faculty to easily and transparently save and retrieve their files from any computer at UNIS. Remote access to the same directory is available through the web. Student resources available through the network include the computerized catalogs of the three UNIS libraries, encyclopedias, collections of articles and periodicals, and language learning software.
The Office of Technology maintains the network and network user accounts and home directories. It manages technology acquisition, installation, and repair. It maintains the UNIS website, intranet, and messaging system. It maintains the central database used by the offices in the different schools and the network servers and software. The Office organizes technology courses for faculty and staff. Mass e-mails are sent from the office to communicate with parents and alumni.
The staffing that supports Information and Communication Technology at UNIS consists of a Director of Technology with overall responsibility, an IT Manager, and 3 systems specialists. The Media specialists, responsible for the UNIS media lab, theatre support, and media support school-wide, are part of the same team. The ICT educational program is further supported by a head of department. Five computer instructors/integration specialists working in the different schools teach computer classes and provide grade-level eductional technology support for other teachers.
The Manhattan Media Lab is a state of the art-media-production center that includes a small TV studio. The Media Lab is used to produce student and faculty media projects, to teach students multi-media skills, and to support classroom instruction. Student media "crews" support and document UNIS events. |
