Valerie-Leila comes from a UN/UNIS family.  Her mother worked at the UN for over 30 years.  Valerie-Leila and her sister both graduated from UNIS, and most recently her niece did as well.  After leaving UNIS, Valerie-Leila obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Fordham University and received her law degree from Fordham Law School, with Honors in International Law. 

A lawyer by training, Valerie-Leila has spent the majority of her career focusing on anti-money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions, and anti-bribery and corruption in both Compliance and Legal roles, and has worked in both New York and London.  She is currently the Global Head of Financial Crime Compliance for Coinbase, a global cryptocurrency exchange.  Prior to Coinbase, Valerie-Leila held similar roles at Citi, Barclays, JPMorgan and Credit Suisse. Valerie-Leila also held positions in the Enforcement Division of NASDR (now FINRA) and as a litigation attorney with two US law firms. 

In addition, Valerie-Leila served as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham Law School for six years and co-authored AML for a Blockchain Age for the Journal  of Financial Compliance (Winter 2023, Volume VII, 2).
