T1 Music Theory and Production I begins by reviewing the foundational principles of music and production. Once basics are reviewed, more complex concepts are introduced such as acoustical science, sound design, analog synthesis, film scoring and advanced production and theory. The year culminates in a composition exemplifying all of the aforementioned skills.
T2 Music Theory and Production I: In the first semester, the focus of T2 Music Theory is on learning the foundations of theoretical principles; scales and key signatures, intervals, clefs, rhythm, and chord construction. In the second semester, students are introduced to four-part harmony and melodic/ harmonic compositional techniques. All concepts from both semesters are applied in one final arrangement/ composition. This class is recommended for prospective IB Music candidates.
T1/T2 Guitar focuses on acquiring the skills necessary for playing a variety of musical styles on guitar. These would include classical guitar technique and repertoire, popular songs in folk, rock and jazz genres and ensemble playing skills. Reading of notation, TAB and chord diagrams will be taught. The class requires home practice of 20 minutes/5 times per week, so an instrument at home is mandatory. This would be a nylon string classical guitar (please see teacher before purchasing).
Camerata String Ensemble is a performance class for students in T1-T4, where students who play violin, viola, cello or double bass are asked to analyze, rehearse and perform string orchestra repertoire from the western and international music traditions. Students that are more advanced have the opportunity to play as a soloist with the ensemble. Interested students must have at least two years of prior study and be approved by the director of the ensemble. Students in the Camerata must also be able to maintain a regular practice routine including weekly private/individual coachings and lessons.
Senior Chorus is a performance class made up of Tut House singers in grades T1-T4. The class explores advanced choral music and choral artistry from around the world. Emphasis is placed on healthy vocal technique, navigating the choral score and group performance. The Senior Chorus performs regularly throughout the school year. An audition is required to participate.
Vocal Chamber Ensemble is an auditioned performance group made up of Tut House singers in T1-T4 who possess a high degree of dedication and self-motivation. Being a member of the Senior Chorus is a requisite. The group studies and performs advanced choral music from many genres and cultures and performs for special occasions at UNIS as well as throughout NYC and Abroad.
UNIS Wind Ensemble is a performance class for T1-T4 students that fosters musical and technical growth on instruments in the woodwind, brass, and percussion families. Students are charged with rehearsing, performing, and analyzing music from the traditional band repertoire that encompasses a variety of styles which include both western and global genres. Advanced students with an interest in music composition are encouraged to compose for the ensemble. Students are required to maintain a consistent practice schedule and take private lessons on their instrument. The UNIS Wind Ensemble performs in Carnegie Hall every three years and in concerts and special events throughout the school year.
Jazz Band I (T1-T4) is a large ensemble jazz group that studies, rehearses and performs music from the wider jazz & world music repertoire. With an emphasis on ensemble playing and improvisation, the members are all encouraged to explore and discover their own improvising voice. We welcome both traditional and non-traditional jazz instruments, and strive to create an open and friendly atmosphere paired with a focused and hard working ethic.
Jazz Band II (MS/TH) focuses on rehearsing and performing jazz repertoire, studying jazz theory/harmony, and working on improvisational concepts and practices. Some areas of focus include applying scales and chord progressions, modal harmony, voice leading, variations in form, and developing improvisational vocabulary. With an initial focus on the blues and related jazz repertoire, the ensemble with also delve into the many varied styles of jazz, including latin jazz (Cuban and Brazilian music), rock and pop influences, the avant-garde (beginning with the music of Ornette Coleman), and the protest music of the 1960's and beyond.
