The excitement of college counseling at UNIS is that the world is our campus. Each year our students apply to and enroll at universities in ten or more countries outside of the United States.

At UNIS, we recognize that choosing and applying to the right college or university can feel overwhelming for both students and families. Our college counselors are dedicated to guiding students through every step of the process, helping to simplify and streamline their journey.

Each student is paired with a dedicated college counselor, meeting regularly throughout their T3 and T4 experience. Together, they explore the student’s strengths, interests, and goals, ensuring they are well-prepared to thrive in the post-graduation environment that best fits them and to submit strong, thoughtfully crafted college applications.

College Counseling Process

T1
T1

UNIS college counselors guide T1 students in laying a strong foundation for a successful and fulfilling Tutorial House experience. Students are encouraged to explore extracurricular activities they enjoy, develop effective study and time-management skills, strengthen their vocabulary in preparation for future SAT/ACT testing, and thoughtfully select sophomore courses that align with their interests and long-term goals.

T2
T2

UNIS college counselors support T2 students as they begin to identify areas of passion and interest while preparing for the academic expectations of T3. Students are encouraged to take practice college entrance exams, such as the PSAT, with guidance and resources readily available through the counseling team.

Counselors also work closely with students to thoughtfully plan their IB coursework, ensuring alignment with individual interests and long-term goals while building a strong foundation for college success. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to engage in UNIS clubs and events and to pursue meaningful activities and passion projects beyond the classroom.

T3
T3

In T3, students are paired with their specific college counselor, who meets with them regularly to provide personalized guidance and support. During this year, counselors help students explore opportunities such as attending college fairs, preparing for the SAT/ACT, taking practice exams, brainstorming college essay topics and letters of recommendation, and visiting potential universities.

Counselors also work with students to develop an initial list of colleges and universities to guide the remainder of the college counseling process. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to stay actively involved on campus and pursue activities that reflect their passions, creativity, and personal growth.

T4
T4

T4 represents the culmination of the college counseling process, as students receive personalized guidance through the application and decision-making journey. Counselors support students with multiple drafts of college essays, meetings with admissions representatives, scheduling interviews, finalizing college lists, attending remaining college fairs, and completing SAT or ACT testing.

Counselors also assist with financial aid applications and provide guidance in selecting the best-fit college for each student. At UNIS, support doesn’t end when applications are submitted—counselors continue to meet with students throughout the year, ensuring they graduate with a clear, confident plan for the future and excitement about the next chapter of their academic journey.

Counseling Department Events

The UNIS Counseling Department hosts a variety of events throughout the year to support both students and families, complementing the one-on-one guidance available during school hours. These events include College Planning Workshops, College Nights, College Fairs, College Visits, IB Information Sessions, and Parent Coffees.

These events offer valuable opportunities for families to learn more about the college process, ask questions, and engage with college counselors in a welcoming, informal setting.
