At the UNIS Middle School, students navigate a pivotal stage of growth with a curriculum that builds independence, inquiry, and strong analytical skills. Our teachers guide early adolescents through a rigorous international program that connects learning across subjects, strengthens communication, and deepens global awareness. With supportive advisory structures and a focus on social-emotional development, students gain confidence, responsibility, and the skills needed for success in the Tutorial House and beyond.

Sustainability

Middle School students take the lead in building a more sustainable future. Throughout the year, they participate in hands-on projects such as planting with Ms. Steph, conducting environmental research, and presenting innovative solutions at the annual Sustainability Fair. With sustainability woven into the curriculum, students learn to think critically and act responsibly as global stewards.

Learning comes alive through experiences that spark creativity and independence. Whether students are making fresh pasta in Italian, attending performances, exploring NYC’s cultural institutions, or heading out on grade-level trips and overnight camps, the Middle School opens up new possibilities for discovery, collaboration, and real-world learning.

Going Global

With language at the heart of UNIS, Middle Schoolers experience the world through authentic cultural immersion. The MLD program takes flight as students study up to nine languages and extend their learning through invigorating local field trips, cultural exchanges, and annual French and Spanish trips abroad—building confidence, curiosity, and global awareness.

Middle School students deepen their understanding of global citizenship through hands-on learning connected to the United Nations. From classroom lessons built around the Sustainable Development Goals to immersive UN Day workshops led by experts and faculty, students learn how international cooperation, peacebuilding, and advocacy shape the world around them
