Curiosity Leads the Way
Visual Arts begins with curiosity - the desire to observe, imagine, question, and create.
Through artistic exploration, students learn to see the world from new perspectives, express their ideas, and develop confidence in their artistic voice.
Learning Through Making
Through drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, digital media, and design, students develop technical skills, creative thinking, and the ability to communicate ideas through the arts. They are encouraged to take creative risks, solve problems, reflect on their work, and engage with diverse perspectives.
Through interdisciplinary projects and inquiry, students also engage with local and global issues, including themes connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Beyond the Classroom
New York City serves as an extension of the classroom. Students engage with museums, galleries, parks, guest artists, and the city’s vibrant cultural landscape as part of their artistic learning. Opportunities include participation in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and exhibitions beyond the school community.
A highlight of the program is the annual IB Visual Arts Exhibition, where T4 (12th grade) students present their work in a professional gallery setting in Chelsea, celebrating their growth as artists and creative thinkers.
