Outdoor Trips
Middle School and Tutorial House students are offered sustained opportunities to engage with the natural environment through grade-level outdoor trips and residential camps. These annual experiences foster an understanding of rural landscapes and encourage students to examine the dynamic relationship between humans and nature.
A cornerstone of this program is Week Without Walls, a seven-day experiential learning journey that immerses Tutorial House students in a wide range of outdoor and collaborative activities, including rafting, camping, kayaking, sports, obstacle-course challenges, team-building exercises, archery, gardening, hiking, and leadership development. Through these interdisciplinary and experiential experiences, students develop resilience, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while strengthening their connection to the natural world.
Collectively, these excursions cultivate essential life skills, create lasting shared experiences, and deepen students’ appreciation for environmental systems and outdoor learning.

Campus Outdoor Spaces
Situated in the heart of New York City, UNIS recognizes the importance of providing students with meaningful opportunities to engage with outdoor spaces and connect with nature. Our beautiful campus along the East River has thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces that support exploration, recreation, and experiential learning. These include a rooftop turf for sports and physical activity, a central courtyard with garden areas, a playground and court adjacent to the river, and a versatile front-campus outdoor area used for events, gatherings, and student activities. Collectively, these spaces foster both environmental reflection and collaborative engagement, reinforcing the value of outdoor learning in an urban context.
