The quiet anticipation was palpable in the United Nations International School cafeteria on October 22, as over 400 Junior School students eagerly awaited the arrival of one of the most consequential women in the world. Seated in neat rows that spanned the entire room, the murmurings were astonishingly subdued for an audience not typically known for quiet composure—ages ranged from five to nine, after all.
But composure they most certainly had, and as Samantha Power, United States Ambassador to the United Nations entered the room, cheers erupted, and a few students even stood to get a better glimpse of such an important global figure. Over the course of a half hour, the ambassador spoke of issues of human rights, gender equality, and the important work the United Nations is doing across the world.
