Dear Parents,

I hope that this note finds you well -- and staying warm! Our next parent coffee is on Wednesday, January 17th, from 8:30-9:30am in the Cafeteria. We will continue our discussions about academic priorities and programs, and how it relates to our identity as a Middle School and the overarching UNIS Mission.

If you have not yet had a chance to complete the survey on Parenting in the Digital World, please share your thoughts via this online form; our team will use this feedback as we plan additional sessions and workshops over the course of the rest of the academic year.

Sincerely,

Chad Fairey
Middle School Principal

All M3 and M4 students are invited to our annual iceskating party at Lasker Rink in Central Park. Due to extreme temperatures the party has been rescheduled for Friday, January 12th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. There is no cost --- the skate rentals are included and we have the rink for ourselves!

Each M3 / M4 student needs an adult chaperone. It does not have to be a parent, and one adult can be responsible for couple of kids, but please be aware – students who show up by themselves are not going to be admitted. The guardians are most welcome to skate as well. There is concession stand on the premises, serving hot chocolate, tea and snacks for purchase.

Enter Lasker Rink via Center Park from 110 Street and Lenox Avenue.

We will bring back the Principal's Book Club in the New Year. Our first book together this year will be Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future. Written in 2005, this groundbreaking book looks to the future of global business and economy and condenses research about the kinds of learning, right-brain skills and mindsets that will be most powerfully linked to success.

We will meet on Thursday, January 25th, from 8:30-9:30 (location TBD) to discuss the book and reflect on implications for our work with our middle schoolers at UNIS.

The library has been buzzing with research projects, book browsing, artwork and new discoveries of all kinds! On November 7 we were honored to host acclaimed author Hena Khan, who spoke with M1s about her life as a Muslim American writer and Amina's Voice, a novel about friendship, tolerance and the strength to be yourself. A book signing and festive lunch with M1/M2 Book Club members and a group of M1s followed.

For an overview of Fall 2017 book clubs, learning experiences and activities, please view this slideshow, which has also been shared with your children, faculty, and staff.

Speaking of books...

In response to your requests, the MS Library Parent Resource Folder has been revived and updated with curated book recommendations, "Best of 2017" lists, tips and arguments for reading as a family, and links to book-related events around New York. Meanwhile, we are now loaning library books which are not due until after break in (gasp!) January 2018.

Love Your Libraries!

It's never too late for an NYPL Library card. This passport to a network of learning and a wealth of books, databases, DVDs, music, audiobooks and other resources, connects you with the life of New York City and the world beyond. It's also a great traveling companion for the coming Winter Break!

If you have any questions or ideas, please stop by or reach out to me atdlewis@unis.org. Thank you for all of your suggestions and support this fall -- and keep reading!

The next time that you are in the main Middle School hallway, take a few moments to stop and peruse the M4 art exhibit on identity mapping. Working with use MTA Metrocards, our young artists used a variety of techniques and mixed media to communicate perspective through imagery, mapping and elements of art.
The drama department is excited to offer M1 and M2 families an optional evening theatre trip to see SCHOOL OF ROCK on Broadway in late May. Details about the discounted tickets and joining this celebratory event are found here. Seats are limited so don't delay!
