WEEK: B

Thanks to Ellen Cava-Haag, our fabulous Junior School performers and incredible Middle School musicians for a wonderful May Day celebration. The J4 students outdid themselves as they danced and wove the ribbons smoothly around the maypole.

This week, parents and faculty will have the opportunity to meet with two of the three candidates for the Executive Director position. The first candidate will be in Queens on Tuesday morning, the second on Thursday morning and the third next week. Details below. As a result, the J4 "Introduction to Middle School" meeting will be moved from Wednesday, May 16th to Thursday, May 17th at 8:40AM.

The M1 students have now been to Camp Mason and the M4s are enjoying Costa Rica and Montpellier. While in Camp Fernanda Osbourne broke her wrist. While quite a serious break, it was able to be reset and Fernanda's mom went to camp to be with her and escort her home. When Fernanda returns to school this week, we will all be there to cheer her fortitude and to help in any possible so that she does not stress her reset wrist in any way.

The May PA meeting will take place on Friday at 8:45 AM.

Thank you for your continued support of the Queens campus!

  • Tuesday, May 8th
  • Thursday, May 10th
  • Wednesday, May 16th

Please RSVP sasha.legeros@pa.unis.org no later than Monday May 7th if you plan to attend.

  • Pennies for Patients

The boxes are getting heavy and we want them even heavier!! Students are encouraged to continue to bring in pennies and other spare change all month to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission to cure children with leukemia and other blood-related cancers. A collection box is in each classroom and at the front desk in the lobby. This is UNIS Queens' 13th year participating in this program, and we continue to do so in memory of former UNIS Queens student, Michele Louis. Thank you for helping to make a difference. Every penny counts!

  • Sports Days Rescheduled

Due to the change in a number of end-of-year events conflicting with previously scheduled Sports

Days, we have had to reschedule Sports Days. As our permits for Cunningham Park are for the

original dates, we have had to shift classes while maintaining the original dates.

The Sports Days will all be at the park and are as follows:

Friday, June 1st - M3 & M4 9:30-12:00 and back at school by 12:30 as this is a half day due to the

T4 graduation

Tuesday, June 5th - JA, J1, J2, and J3. Because of the small numbers in JA and J1, 4 classes can

be grouped together, rather than the usual 3. J4s will be going to the UN that day.

Thursday, June 7th - J4, M1 and M2. The M1 Concert, originally scheduled for that day, will be on

Monday, June 4th at 2PM.

  • May Day Photos

  • Photos from the M4 Trips:
    • Costa Rica

  • Montpellier

  • MAP Testing

Map testing is now complete. Processing and statistics for results need to be tabulated and, once

compete, will be shared with parents. I expect results to be available in about 2 weeks, if not sooner.

  • MAY IB Learner Profile Focus: We are OPEN-MINDED Students understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience. IB students have a deep understanding of various cultures and views, bringing an appreciation of new views to both their academic study and their involvement in local and wider communities.

  • Security

As we remain vigilant about security in Queens, please remember to have your ID in order

to enter the building.

  • Reminders:
    • Please remember to drop off your children in front of the building, rather than across the street, and please be considerate of our neighbors and do not block their driveways.

Thanks to all of you who go out of your way to circle around the corner for the safety of

students.

  • Please email your homeroom teacher, and Mrs. Rodriguez (trodriguez@unis.org), or Ms. Sorrentini (rsorrentini@unis.org,) or call 718-658-6166 before 9:30 to report if your child will be absent from school, as well as any change in dismissal arrangements.
